Project Description
The Chinook Centre Expansion is a two storey addition to the northeast corner of the existing facility. There will be two levels of cast-in-place concrete underground parking and two levels of structural steel mall addition. The underground parkade footprint is almost twice as large as the mall addition footprint. The new corridor tie-ins will require renovations to the existing mall to blend the old with the new. Part of the renovation includes creating a clerestory for the existing common mall area at the interface locations. All work will be completed within and around an operating facility that hosts thirteen million customers a year.
Construction started in April 2008 with underground site utility work; shoring and excavation followed shortly thereafter. The concrete substructure commenced in July 2008 with footings, columns and slab on grade. Final completion is scheduled for fall 2010. The Chinook Centre Expansion project will further enhance the retail experience for its customers and continue its trademark as being the best mall in Calgary and one of the busiest malls in Canada. |
